Cheapest UK Dedicated Servers

The truth is this: most server companies use the amazingly fast data centres this country has to offer, on really good hardware running the same Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP (LAMP) Stack.

So why is it that one may charge £20 a month, and one may charge £200? Here's a quick guide to make sure you don't get burnt by buying too cheap - or too expensive!

	Where on Earth is it?

Many of the biggest names in the web hosting scene that trade as UK companies actually host in what they call 'European Data Centres'. For example, many sites hosted on GoDaddy are actually hosted from the Netherlands. This will impact on the speed available - which in turn will reduce the performance of your game servers or websites (which could lead to reduced SEO!).

But it also leads onto our next point - if your server is on the other side of the world...

	Who's there to fix it?

Is your £20 a month really enough to support your server? In this instance, it's somebody in their bedroom just calling another companies support to run out and fix it. Perhaps worse still, your £200 a month could be going to pay a Managing Director who doesn't know their Linux from their Unix's mortgage.

You want to be able to rely on your provider to be on the other side of an email or telephone day-or-night and ready to rush to the data centre to fix your problem.

	SLAs

Often, the cheaper providers wont provide Service-Level-Agreements to you. A contract between both parties that ensures that a website will be up for at least a defined amount of time each month, and that if this is not made they are compensated some money. When charging £20 a month, their margins of profit are so low that they simply cannot afford to offer these contracts. If your server hosting your best client goes down for a few hours, or worse still the data becomes corrupt - you might be left responsible for it.

	Who can I trust?

Okay - we're biased! But we write this post with confidence that VeloxServ's Dedicated Servers from £50 a month offer the perfect balance between affordability, speed and security.

What’s happening in Q1, 2012 at VeloxServ

Our existing clients already know we strive to offer the highest level of uptime and customer support. We thought we'd share what's in store for Quarter One of 2012 and how it benefits new and existing clients.

	Cheltenham Expansion

As we continue our rapid expansion in Cheltenham, we are delighted to announce that work is underway constructing our own private 'pod' within the datacentre which is due for completion in the last week of February 2012. In short, this contains our racks in our own private lockable area away from other clients who have racks within the datacentre.

Our staff and the datacentre technicians are the only people permitted to enter our pod, rackspace is not shared with other clients of the datacentre and therefore adds another physical layer of security when accessing your server(s). Each rack will be provided with up to 64 amp A+B feeds from diverse UPS power rooms, they will then be connected into our core switch taking advantage of a multi homed 10Gbps network. If you'd like to organise a tour or discuss this further, please contact us.

	New London Datacentre

To add to our portfolio of datacentre locations as of March 2012, we will be taking on rackspace in a new datacentre in London. Over the last year we've worked closely with our partners in Cheltenham who have now taken on the build of another high specification datacentre, from here we'll be able to offer a fantastic saving compared to docklands datacentres. Each rack will be provided with up to 32 amp A+B diverse power feeds and utilise a multi homed 10Gbps Network.

The new London Datacentre will also have on-site NOC technicians and escorted access 24/7. If you'd like to know a little more about the datacentre or want to purchase London Colocation please get in touch.

Does a small business need a dedicated server?

Ten years ago, Dedicated and Virtual hosting would be something that only larger busiensses needed, to cater for their remote workers or worldwide offices. Today is a different story, we're all on the move all of the time. There are very few businesses that are just a 9-5 operation, you may even be one of those people that finds themselves replying to your emails in the early hours.

For most businesses the Internet is a lifeline, dedicated and virtual servers are no longer an enterprise business tool, but a small business reality. The prices of Dedicated Servers have plumited, which means almost anyone can benefit from the resources a dedicated server can provide.

The days of software being installed on individual PC's is coming to an end, the Internet is getting better connected and speeds are increasing almost daily. The Internet is transforming into a new computing environment hosting mission critical applications and the core workings to a lot of companies.

For smaller businesses (even more so than larger businesses) dedicated hosting is generally a better option, you're able to centralise your email, calendar, contacts and documents accessing them from meetings up and down the country, enhancing your collaboration between your staff and customers. If you're just starting out with a new business venture, maybe buying server hardware and office space isn't a viable option for you - dedicated hosting removes the need for you to be confined to 4 walls.

Your upfront investment costs are gone, you can be up and working within a matter of hours and there's technical staff ready to help you if you get stuck - all of this is part of the price, reducing your staffing costs.

The datacentres in which the servers are hosted feature far more redundant components than that of your average office, with on-site diesel generators, uninteruptable power supplies and multi-gigabit networks, you're safe in the knowledge that uptime is a key factor in the hosting industry and choosing the right provider is crucial.

Why do I need a dedicated Server?

Security - Being on a dedicated server, you are on your own. You do not share the server with anybody else. Nobody has access to the server. So you can be sure that you data is safe.

CPU power - When on a shared hosting plan you share the CPU, RAM and Hard Disk resources with other users. As any other shared resources, there might be occasions in which a given user will take advantage of the CPU or RAM and the server performance can suffer greatly, causing your services to become inaccessible.

Expansion - You benefit from the potential of having up to several hundred gigabytes of RAM and multiple processors which can cater for even the busiest of websites and databases.
